What is lead scoring?

Lead scoring assigns each prospect a 0-100 score based on their behavior and profile. High score = hot purchase intent; low score = not ready yet. Sales focuses on top-scoring leads, conversion and revenue rise. In LeadsUp, behaviors like stated budget, location, viewing request and purchase signal turn into score automatically; at 70+, your salesperson gets a 'hot lead' alert.

Why do lead scoring?

A sales team's most expensive resource is time. Of 100 daily inquiries, maybe 5 are real purchase-intent. Without scoring, the sales person spends hours on 'tire-kickers' and the serious buyer slips away. Scoring auto-triages: 70+ score = priority; <30 = passive nurture list.

Lead scoring signals

Signals split into two categories: profile signals (who?) and behavior signals (what are they doing?). Example signals used in LeadsUp's real estate template:

  • Budget clarified (+20 pts) — 'my budget is X'
  • Location specified (+15 pts) — 'looking in Kadıköy'
  • Viewing intent (+30 pts) — 'can I see it?'
  • Engagement (+10 pts) — 3+ inbound messages
  • Purchase signal (+20 pts) — 'deposit', 'buy now' keywords
  • Listing detail (+5 pts) — looked at a specific property in detail

MQL, SQL, PQL — what's the difference?

Three standard maturity stages:

  • MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead): marketing-qualified — interest exists but not sales-ready (e.g. downloaded white paper, subscribed to blog)
  • SQL (Sales Qualified Lead): sales-validated — budget + need + timeline confirmed, ready for sales call
  • PQL (Product Qualified Lead): tried the product and saw value — used free trial, asked about payment plans
